Can't Shut Down

Hi,
yesterday i left my pc turned on and when i came home i saw that during the
day it rebooted (and i don't know why...) from that moment when i entered
again in win2k (as administrator obviously) i've noticed after pressing the
START button the "Close Session" button disappeared....
I've also pressed "ALT+F4" while on the desktop to shut down the pc and a
"restriction" window popped up saying: "Operation Aborted. On the system
there active restrictions. Please contact the administrator" (sorry i'm
translating from italian so probably won't be literally the same in english,
but that is the main meaning)...
Next step i press CTRL+ALT+DEL, and in the window that opens i can't press
any of the button there Close Session, Log Out, Change Password..etc..
(except Cancel)... i can't even use Task Manager anymore! and i repeat i
logged as Administrator and i checke in the control panel all the privileges
that i've on the Local Computer and it says all the user have the Shut Down
privilege on it.
I've also run a virus scan but everything was ok...
I can't really know what to do... do you have any idea?

Look in Event Viewer for any errors that may give a clue such as failed services,
etc. Also try booting into safe mode to see if the problem goes away which would
indicate a problem with a startup application/service. Make sure that your virus
definitions are current as of today and also run a scan on it for parasites. AdAware
is free and works well, just be sure to update it's definitions before scanning which
you can do from within the program after starting it.

If nothing seems to help try running System File Checker as in sfc /scannow which may
require the install disk and if you are not using SP4 System File Checker can remove
hotfix files. A last resort to a full reinstall would be an in place upgrade of the
operating system that should preserve data and applications but require that you
reinstall first the service pack and then all critical updates. You also could have a
hardware problem if you are experiencing random reboots and possible corruption of
operating system files. Hardware problems are often due to overheating CPU, bad ram,
or bad power supply. --- Steve
