Can't Shut Down (re-post)

Hi. I'm using a stand-alone WinXp-Pro (loaded with SP1) at home.
Consistently update and use anti-spyware, scumware, malware, etc and update
my Norton ant-virus 2-3 times a week. If, after working on my computer for
more than an hour or so, I want to shut down I try to do so by closing all
windows and then disconnect from my adsl. Can't get the connection to close
even by using the task manager- then use the shutdown facility on task
manager but then the computer hangs at the point where it says "saving your
settings which forces me to shut it off by using the power button- not a
good idea I know. Tried using the fix on MS's Knowledge Base using the
catalog items and found one which seems to fit but, unfortunately, don't
know where to target that download since it's not automatic. Grateful for
ANY help. Thanks!

if you've checked all the power settings and have the
latest bios, you may need to edit the registry. be very
careful when editing the registry. save a copy to your
desktop to make sure. or save a new point in system
restore. in any case, i had the same problem and this was
the only thing that worked. start regedit. go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\control panel\desktop. edit the key
PowerOffActive and give it a value of 1. for safety, go
to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop and do the
same thing there. restart your computer. (you may have to
power off like you've been doing.)power on. it worked for
me. good luck.
 
Not really sure how to check the power settings or how I find the latest
bios- would appreciate your help on that. In the meantime, I tried the
regedit and- so far so good!

Alex, does the computer go into standby when it is not connected to DSL?
Does your DSL modem have an on/off switch? What kind of connection for DSL?
Is PPPoE, you should be able to "disconnect." If it is not, the connection
will persist as long as it is present. Try using the power on/off switch on
the modem instead of the computer. Then try standby.
 
Unfortunately, the modem is USB and gets its power from the computer. I've
even unplugged it from the usb and the phone line as well- still no luck-
still hangs at the point where the system says "saving your settings." I'm
current with all my anti-spy/scum/ad/ ware programs as well as Norton
Corporate anti-virus. Thanks for any more suggestions!

Since it doesn't appear to be the modem itself that's causing the
connection to persist - what about software? Did you install new software
from the ISP when you added the DSL connection? If yes, are there any
updates available for it?

You mention using Task Manager to force a shutdown. What happens if you
just give the system a few minutes to unwind whatever is stuck in the
connection? And then shutdown?

Have you vistited the forums at dslreports.com for your ISP yet? Sometimes
there are peculiarities for an ISP. Using their software can add to those.
At those forums, there are sometimes off duty customer service folks that
can advise specifically about that ISP. If you don't run into them, you
will find other customers very familiar with the workings of your ISP.
