Can't set up XP faxing

I have the Windows XP disk and I updated to SP1 and 2 via on line download
long ago and everything is going well. I used to have an HP Office Jet 600
All in One attached to this machine, but moved it to another. All the HP
Office Jet software (which includes faxing) is still, however, installed. I
would like to keep it installed. in case I want to switch the HP All in One
back to this machine...

When I now try to set up XP faxing on this machine, I run into a consistent
problem. The set up wizard asks me to find files, whether on the Windows XP
disk or in the directory servicepack/i386....the files are all there, but the
wizard says they cannot be copied. Because the files can't be copied, the
wizard won't proceed and the faxing service won't install. How do I solve
this problem?

Thanks.

2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files?

In this case, it sounds like the security data base is corrupted as
documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software

Note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the Esentutl.exe utility
and would prefer you try the hotfix.

Quick question. Do you or anyone else know if you get charged for using the
XP faxing? Do your internet provider or telephone charge you at all whether
it's a local or long distance number?

Thanks.

You can only use XP Fax Services with a regular telephone line. You
can't use it over a DSL or cable connection. As with any fax over a
telephone line, the phone company charges you as if it were a regular
telephone call. The ISP has nothing whatsoever to do with it.
