I posted the following message to the setup newsgroup yesterday and haven't
seen a response, and I'm getting desperate. Sorry for the duplicate
post....

Hi. I need help badly. I've spent three days (a couple of hours a day)
trying to get Windows 20000 Server installed as a PDC on a new classroom
LAN, and have failed miserably.

I have just two PCs connected together. I want to set up a mininetwork with
a single client (Win2K Pro) and a single server. The first time I installed
the server, I tried to install RIS at the same time. When I finished the
install and rebooted, I was told I needed to configure several services to
complete the installation, and was prompted first for RIS. However, the
wizard didn't allow me to configure it, telling me there was no domain on
which to do so.

I cancelled out of the RIS installation and tried to install Active
Directory. After more than an hour (it's a slow machine), I realized that
the installation had hung. I had to power down to reboot.

I tried installing several server components individually, but was stopped
several times; it always seemed to need some other component that hadn't
been installed--it was like the chicken and the egg! Occasionally, it would
tell me that the component had already been installed.

I completely removed RIS from the optional components dialog, and tried
again, with the same results.

I finally gave up and started the installation again from scratch (without
RIS). This time it looked much better. After the install, I was asked
whether this was the only server in my network, and I answered yes. (I was
trying to follow Microsoft's step-by-step instructions from their Web page.
It seems that all the MCSE materials assume you're installing your server
on an existing network, and I couldn't find anything on creating a new
domain.)

Everything went fine until I reached the AD installation. Again, after an
hour, the installation hung! So here I am on a Saturday afternoon, right
back where I started Thursday morning 8-(.

I have several questions:

1. What would cause the system to hang at this point each time? (I have
plenty of space; I'm installing to a 2GB NTFS partition.)

2. Is there a way I can tell whether the AD installation is complete?

3. How can I complete the server and domain installation from this point?

As you can tell, I'm very much a newbie when it comes to Win2K server. I've
installed NT server several times, but even that was quite a while ago. I
would REALLY appreciate your help. If anyone can provide a link with this
information, I would be happy.

Thanks in advance.

Is there no one out there who can help me with this problem (quoted below)?
I'm at a total standstill....
