Word document attachments that I send cannot be opened by the recipient as
the document arrives in something other than Word and the icon associated
with it is unknown although there is a Word Icon associated with the
attachment when I send it. If I send a photograph from Pictures there is
no problem in opening.
I'm mystified

Are you using Word 2007?

Dave, many thanks, I am sure that is the problem. I am using the new 2007
version of word. I will now try your solution.

Which version of Word are you using?
The new 2007 version uses a .docx format by default, which cannot be read by
older versions of Word.
You can save your documents in the older format, using the File - Save As...

Or, your recipient can download and install the Office Compatibility Packhttp://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686761033.aspx

Hi

I am saving the docx as a doc by using the save as menu and people
still cant read the documents. Is there something I can download?
Thanks very much!

If you send it to yourself, can you open the attachment?
If yes, then the problem is on the recipient's end.

I saved my attachment as a .doc file, closed the file that I was sending, and
the recipient still couldn't read it. They are using word. Any ideas?

When the recipient received that message, what was the extension
of the attachment? Did the recipient attempt to open the attachment
from within their email program? What email program are they using?
The recipient should try this: save the attachment to the hard drive,
then open that saved file. This will help to narrow down the problem.

They received it as a .doc extension. They tried to open it with their
e-mail program (don't know what program they use) and then they finally got
it open with another program but it was empty.

Send that document to yourself. When you receive it, can you
open the attachment? If yes, then the recipient needs to seek
help for their email program.

In Word 2007 click the orb (or whatever you call it) in the top left and
choose Save As and then Word 97 - 2003 document
