Check for any discrepancies in your account settings.

How To Set Up Outlook Express to Use Your BellSouth E-mail Account:

E-mail scanning can also cause this type of problem.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant
layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving,
and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting
changes and has even been responsible for loss of messages. Your
up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For
more, see:

Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email

Note that for some AV programs, it may be necessary to uninstall the
program and reinstall in Custom Mode and uncheck e-mail scanning when the
option arises.

By any chance are you sending while away from home, using a different
Internet connection provider than Bellsouth/AT&T?

Also, as I understand it, AT&T recently moved all the Bellsouth users to the
AT&T/Yahoo mail platform. You should be using the new settings given here:
http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB401738

Let us know how it goes.
