Can't send -- not even trying to connect

Vista, Windows Mail. Worked fine for several months until yesterday. I hit
Send, and the msg goes to Outbox. Period. I hit ctl-M or Send/Receive All and
I see the Downloading window, I get new Incoming msgs if there are any, then
it closes. Period. If there is a message, it flashes so fast I can't even
tell. New outgoing messages are still in Outbox. Recipients have not received
them. "Send and Receive on Startup" is on, but, again, no error message, no
nothing. Then, get this, I go to Tools/Accounts/Properties/Servers, change
the SMTP server name to nonesense, restart Mail, and the same thing happens.
In other words, Mail is not even trying to connect to the Outgoing SMTP
server (smtp.comcast.net). I do the same thing on my XP Outlook Express
desktop, and I get what you would expect: "The smtp server could not be
found". All Account settings I use on the Outlook Express desktop are the
same as on the Vista laptop: the desktop is still working fine with these
settings. My Internet connection is fine, so it oughta work.

Steve,

Welcome to the "Outbox" problem club. I and several other people have had
the same problem. Go to

www.oehelp.com/wmutil

and download Steve's utility to the desktop per his instructions. Then use
the utility (after unzipping) and compact your e-mail. It worked for me and
hopefully will work for you. Also compact your e-mail every time the dialog
box appears asking if you want to compact your e-mail.

Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. I deleted the chronologically first message from
Outbox, and that allowed the others to be sent. I'm embarrassed that I didn't
try that sooner. I will remember the wmutil utility for later, when Delete
does not do the job. I have no idea why that message caused trouble --- if
only Mail had given me some kind of error message, I wouldn't have had to
bother you guys. Thanks again. Case closed.

Don't hesitate to "bother" us again the next time you need help.
I wish all who request help here would describe their issue in such
detail as you did. That makes it easy to diagnose the problem.
