I have read all of the previous posts. Have uninstalled Norton. Have
restarted computer. Have removed email accounts and set up new from start.
Also have the same problem no matter if I'm using Windows Mail or Outlook
2007. Spent hours on the phone yesterday with ISP, HP, MS with no solution.
New laptop received on Wed. One of the error msgs I get reads: "Error msg:
Task 'myemail address - Sending' reported error (0x800ccc78): 'Cannot send
the message. Verify the email address in your account properties. The server
responded: 553 Authentication is required to send mail as <my email address>.
I have a desktop running XP and have no such problems on it. Same account
setup. Any ideas aside from packing the laptop up and sending it back? Thank
you. Sharon

3 ideas come to mind

Have you tried outgoing authentication?
In outlook tools-accounts, change, more settings, outgoing server tab, then
check "my server requires authentication" -

If your behind a router, try to 'clone mac address' they could be
authenticating you that way.

If you are using an email system other than your isp's own then you may need
a special outgoing server name, something like 'smtpauth.youremailsystem.com'

Tried ckg authentication; didn't work.
I have tried using both Outlook and Windows mail. I don't use the ISP email
system on my desktop; I use Outlook and it works.
Not sure I understand "behind a router". Actually, I am using a wireless
connection (on the laptop only) that is available here in my apt building. I
use RoadRunner (Cable Modem) for the desktop, as I work from it and need a
more secure connection than is available on the wireless.
I'm at my wits end on this.

Another thought, I see in several answers to similiar questions the
possibility that there is a stuck message in outbox. Is it possible to have a
stuck message and not be able to see it in the outbox.
I have a message in the outbox...it is the one I have been trying to send.
Or I thought it was.
Now I think I have thought so much on this that I am rethinking and
confusing myself. lol
Thanks.

then I bet it's my 3rd response. You said you normally use roadrunner which
puts you on your isp's network and no need to authenticate. But your laptop
is on another isp's system with the wireless so you will normally need a
different outgoing email server. Check with your roadrunner's isp, tell them
your sending from another network and get the server address for smtp
authentication. ie smtpauth.yourispname.com. It's probably on their website
too. Once you change that you will still need to leave 'my server requires
authentication' checked too.

I finally heard back from RR. You are correct! I needed a different port
number for outgoing and needed authentication checked. For your info if you
can ever use, the port was 587. Thank you so much, David! Sharon
