Just networked two computers with Linksys router and
broadband connection through Alltel. Host is Compaq
Presario 5WV280 running Windows ME. Client is HP
Pavillion xt178 Laptop running HomeXP. Norton Internet
Security and Antivirus installed on both.
Both computers can receive email.
Both computers can access the internet.
Each computer can access files on other computer.
PROBLEM: Neither can send email.
I've reconfigured firewall and antivirus programs giving
specific permissions but that didn't solve it. I suspect
it is an email configuration problem that is beyond my
level of competence. Email worked fine before
networking. Any ideas?

P.S. Old Microsoft Knowledge Base article 220865
addressed this exact problem vis-a-vis Microsoft
BackOffice Small Business Server. Problem there was
failure to reroute incoming SMTP mail via Microsoft
Exchange, which is not compatible with XP. I can't
locate anything that speaks to rerouting with XP & ME.

Try disabling norton Firewall and Antivirus and check if
the issue still persists.More likely, check the Norton
Antivirus option and remove the mail scan option and see
if it is able to send emails.

Nathan

Go to your router interface>Advanced>Filters and check
iunder MTU if Disabled is nor selected.
If it is just select Enable and put 1492 in the Size field.
