Can't select Fastwrite or 8x?

I have a 9700 Pro on a Abit NF7S board, but I can't select either fastwrite
or 8X AGP in the driver tabs. Well, not quite true - I can select them, but
on reboot they just return to Fastwrite OFF and AGP 4X.
I have them enabled in CMOS.
What is wrong here?
Thanks
Iain

ATI's SMARTGART tests systems and sets them for the highest reliable
performance, or at least that's how it's supposed to work. Fast writes
default to off on VIA chipsets and on some SiS and Nforce boards as well.

The good news is that neither of those settings makes any appreciable
difference in performance.

If you're running XP, you can disable SMARTGART in services and try to get
the system to use the bios settings. It is also possible to install the
Catalysts without SMARTGART, I forget how but you can find directions by
searching the forums at www.rage3d.com

Or you could just ignore those settings as long as your system is stable and
performing as it should.

Thanks. I reinstalled the latest nvidia MB drivers, and reinstalled Cat
3.10 and now I can select both Fastwrite and 8x!
Thanks for the help anyway.

Welcome to SMARTGART hell. I had the same problem w/my Abit NF7-S v2.0 board.
Nothing would enable fastwrites and/or AGP 8X. The fix for me turned out to be
clearing out the windows temp directory (this was on 98SE). Here's what I found
on the Rage3d forum:

"
type in the run box %temp%. Delete the tmp files found in the directory which
comes up."

You could also try searching the rage3d forum for %temp%.
