Can't See XP Laptop from Vista 5472 Computer

Hey guys,

I have Vista 5472 installed on my desktop. I have a 22 GB .mig file that I
need to transfer onto this computer from my laptop. I wanted to just connect
them with an ethernet cable or through my wireless network to transfer the
file.

The problem is that I don't see the XP laptop from my Vista desktop. Both
can connect to the internet (wireless or wired). I've tried everything I can
think of. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to see the laptop?

Hi Will,

The first thing I would look at is the cable... if you are connecting
computer to computer (no switch/hub/router) then you need a cross-over cable
rather than a regular RJ-45 patch cable.

Hello,

Make sure that you have told Vista that your network is a private network
and that you have network sharing and discovery set to allow.

You can change these settings in the "Network Center" control panel for
Vista Beta 2, and the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel for later
builds.

Also, make sure both your laptop and your desktop computer are in the same
workgroup. You can see and change the workgroup setting thru the System
control panel in both Windows Vista (in Advanced System Settings) and
Windows XP.

Depending on how you have wireless set up, this may not work via your
wireless connection. I would recommend transfering your file via a WIRED
connection regardless due to the size.

A third-party firewall/security product may be blocking this, or the Windows
Firewall may be blocking it if you have manually configured it or set it to
ignore exceptions.

In any case, you should be able to access your other computer directly by
typing \\IPADDRESS into any explorer window, where IPADDRESS is the IP
address of the other computer. A firewall/security product may block this,
however, depending on how it is configured.
