Can't see some shared network folders

I am trying to share some of my PC folders (not system ones) over my local
network so that I can access them from my laptop.
Via folder/properties-sharing I have set these folders up as shared on the
network using the name$ convention so that they don't appear in network
places. I then map a drive to these shared folder on the laptop.
However, while on the laptop I can see the top level shared folder, and I
can see some of the sub folders and files, there are others that just don't
show up and I don't understand why (they are not set as hidden, system etc).
Even if I map a network drive on the same PC as the folders/file reside on,
I still can't see these same ones, although they are there in Windows
Explorer.
I guess it must be something to do with ownership and permissions (am using
XP Home), and have tried (via safe mode, folder properties, security)
opening access to the folders and files to everyone, but no success.
What am I doing wrong, any suggestions please?
Also, can anyone point me to somewhere I can read up on ownership,
permissions etc as applicable to XP (or is it NTFS).
Thanks, David

What folders are you trying to share? XP Home does not permit sharing of
users' home directories (My Documents) or Program Files although it
allows sharing of individual folders inside those directories. Consider
putting files you wish to share in the Shared Files folder.

The folders I'm trying to share are not My Documents, or Program Files (or
any sub folders under these), or any other "system generated" folders/files.
They are new folders/files I've created on my D: drive. Using the Shared
File folder rather defeats the objective of keeping them off My Network
Places by using the Name$ convention.
Any more ideas what the problem might be?
David.

Offhand, it sounds to me like you're making things a lot more complex
than they need to be. You don't need to use My Network Places if you
don't want to. You can create shortcuts to the shares (use
Search>Computers on the network). I'm not sure why you want to map the
shares to drives unless you are using software that requires it.

Are all the machines on the network using XP Home Service Pack 2?

Here are some links to help you with networking. The first link is to a
small network troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna and it is very
good at pinpointing problem area(s).
