Hi folks,

I have a WINS server behind my firewall, on the outside of the firewall
I have a windows 2003 server.

I have configured the 2003 server with the ip address of the wins
server inside the firewall, I've opened all ports (testing only, no
internet connection) and have verified using "nbtstat -n" that the 2003
server has indeed registered with the WINS server.

The problem is that I cannot from any other PC on the network see this
2003 server in "My Network Places". I can however do a "Start | Run |
\\servername", this connects and shows me the shares available on the
2003 server.

Why would this server not be in "My Network Places"?

thanks
Dave

Perhaps, the 2003 hasn't registered in the WINS server. Do you have 2003 record in the WINS?

Is the 2003 in the different subnet? It may use itself as master browser. use browstat to check it.

Q: How can I check my Master Browsers?

hi Robert,

OK, I have more info...

2browstat status" command on PC behind firewall reports that server A
is the master browser. Running "Browstat status" on 2003 Server in
front of the firewall reports that it is the master browser. It's as if
the 2003 is doing a broadcast only.

In front of firewall = 192.168.10.X
behind firewall = 192.168.0.X

2003 Server is a member of the domain which is situated behind the
firewall.

Forgot to mention,

yes there is a registration on the WINS Server for the 2003 server.

Also I've just noticed a setting in TCP/IP properties which is...

"Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" this machine has a static IP and it tells
me there to choose this option over "Default"

I'll give this a go.

OK I've rebooted the server and checked "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
and it's still not in "My Network Places"

It's now however NOT the master browser but a backup browser, the
master browser is some other machine that's on the front of the
firewall, in fact all servers which are on the front of the firewall
are showing on here, it's as if it can only see these servers.

I meant to say..

If I do a "net view \\2003servername" I successfully see a list of
shares on the
machine.
