Hi,
2 wirelessly networked PC's, running W2K Pro. Both HDD's are set as
"shared" & File & Printer Sharing is enabled on both.. A local printer can
be accessed by the remote PC, & is seen in "My Network Places....
Workgroup", as are 2 other items, "Printers" & "Scheduled Tasks".

No matter how I try, I can't see the files/folders on either PC.

NIS 2004 is installed on both machines, but even with that disabled I can't
see the files.

Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

TIA.

Same user accounts/passwords on both machines? When you say both HDDs are
shared, are you refering to the default administrative shares? OR did you
manually create shares on both drives and assign permissions to the
account/group with which
you are logging on? What about NTFS permissions? Also re-check tcpi/ip
properties, same workgroup, same subnet, etc...

NIS 2004 ???

No problem logging-in to each machine from the other.
Yes, it's the share setup by default, I haven't made any changes there.
The workgroups are the same.
Norton Internet Security has been configured to allow (only) access to the
opposite machine.

NTFS permissions ???

If you formatted the drives with NTFS you will have another tab in the drive
properties for security. You need to assign permissions there as well as
the share permissions. If not careful, share or ntfs permissions will
overrule the other. For example, if administrators group have full share
rights, but are denied ntfs permissions, the deny permission wins. I
suggest that you manually create the necessary shares and grant the
appropriate permissions to those shares. You could try disabling NIS
temporarily to see if it is somehow causing the problem.

Under the Security tab, the only entry is "Everyone". This has Full Control
& all items are "allowed". Do I also need to specifically add myself (as
log-in name) & assign full control? I assumed "Everyone" would mean just
that.
Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here.

I have tried disabling NIS but that makes no difference.

For security reasons, it is not wise to leave the Everyone group in full
control on Windows 2000, that is why Microsoft changed it with newer O/S's.
You should specify the group or user(s) to which you want to explicitly
grant permissions.

You still haven't said whether or not you manually created shares. You need
to do this in order to view the drive, folders or printer from another
machine. Right-click on the item you want to share and selecting "Sharing."
Then grant permissions to that shared object. Folders that are shared will
appear with a little hand under it with a blue sleeve. Otherwise, you need
to attach to the "hidden" shares, ie: Start>>Run>> \\computername\c$
