I have just upgraded from Windows ME to XP Home. I have
a home LAN with several computers. The upgraded machine
cannot see any other computer on the LAN. I can ping the
upgraded machine from the other computers. I cannot ping
any computer from the upgraded maching. The upgraded
machine can ping itself. I can get to my home gateway
and the internet via the LAN. The other computers see
the upgraded machine in network places but can't access
any files. The upgraded machine cannot see any other
computer in network places. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Rex

I have the same problem. I can't see the others on the
LAN, but they see me. They also can't access my computer
because it says they don't have permission.

Ironically enough, recently my Windows XP computer cannot
see the other computers on our home network, but can see
the workgroup but it says that the workgroup is not
accessible and that I do not have permission. I have
been able to use this network for the past 5 months, and
after a recent update of Windows automatically, it no
longer works. I have gone through absolutely ever
knowledge base article I can find. I can ping all of the
computers, but cannot access them in explorer. This is
beyond frustrating and now Microsoft doesn't offer email
support to people who have received XP with their
computers!!! AGGH! I have worked on computers for years
and never found one I couldn't fix until now... I am
desperate for any help anyone can offer!!!

Thanks in advance!

I have the same problems!!! Whats going on with
Microsoft now!!!!

I have been having a similar problem for the last few
weeks. Have posted several messages but none of the
suggestions have fixed the problem.

Well, I am not alone I thought I was going crazy. I think
I even lost 4 lb over this. I thought it was my new
computer with win xp pro. It worked fine for a week then
suddenly wouldn't share files or printers any longer. I
see no one as an answer?

Rex, your problem sounds like the XP firewall to me, try
turning it off. Also check workgroup and IP address
ranges Some of the other posts in this group sound like
the NetBios of TCP/IP issue.

If the IP address is set to Auto Assign, try turning
on "Enable NetBios over TCP/IP". TCP/IP Properties,
Advanced, WINS.

I have found that if this is off not only can the XP PC
not browse the network (although drive mapping works OK)
but other PCs may not be able to browse either.

If the IP address is set to manual assign this problem
does not seem to arise, probably because Windows changes a
heap of setting between manual and auto assign.
