can't see network folder

hi!

I have a wired problem. I am connected over a basic network ( i think it is
called peer-to-peer).
The manner in which the computers are connected is as follows:
1) The main computer is an XP Professional.
2) The other computers are win 98, win 98se, and one XP home (thats me).

The network is to help us share files and printers and the internet
connection. The funny prat is that I am able to acess the internet, use a
lan messenger program and communicate with other users. But i am not able to
access the shared folder on the Main computer.

When I try and ping to this address i get a request time out.

Can someone enlighten me to the problem.

Thanx
Nelson.

Hi there,

Check if you have any firewall installed in the netwoked computers. If yes,
configure the firewall for home network. In case you have sp2 installed on
your XP computers, then here is what you can do to configure the Windows
firewall for home network:

1. Click Start, run, type "firewall.cpl" (with out quotation marks) and
click OK.
2. In the resulting window, under the Advanced tab, place a check mark next
to the "Local area connection"
3. Click OK.

In case of Norton firewall and NIS, see here:

Nelson, are you guys on a home network - use a router where you all are
connected into, and it connects to the modem? This isn't called a P2P
(peer to peer) network, it's just a home network. Now, you say you are
Win XP too, so I don't know what is going on. If the computer having the
problem seeing the shared folder on the main XP computer is a Windows 98
computer, you have to have to main computer make a set-up file for
non-Windows XP computers. You put it on as floppy or a CD if the
computers don't have a floppy. It installs quickly on the win 98
computer, and then you should be able to access the folder in question.

Also, you need to turn on files sharing in your computer, and this might
be your problem. I am trying to remember where I do that.... In your icon
in control panel, your "network connections". Right click on the icon in
network connections (LAN connection) and choose properties. You see a
list of stuff, like TCP/IP. One thing there should be checked & say
"file & printer sharing for Microsoft Networks".
If you don't see it, I think if you click "install" right there where you
are looking, & you'll have the option to install it. This is all fuzzy to
me, it's been a while since I've done it.

Done all you said and still does not work. (I didn't have to do anything,
all that you mentioned was already set correctly.)
