My home network:

2 XP Home Desktops, mine has the DSL modem and shares the net connection
1 98SE Desktop
1 XP Pro laptop
2 2000 Pro Laptops

OK, so I installed the SP 1 update (I think it was 1, the latest SP anyway),
in My desktop that shares the internet connection and has all the printers,
etc.

After this update, seemingly, this computer is no longer visible on the
network. Yes, the drives/folders are shared, and I can ping it by name from
any of other computers, and I can also Map a Network drive. It is just not
visible in the list of computers on the network, and its driving me crazy.

Any idea of why this is happening, or more importantly, how I can fix it?

TIA
Diane

The latest service pack is SP 2 and the firewall in SP2 is turned on by
default and can block network connections. If you have a separate firewall,
turn off the XP firewall as it is redundant and unnecessary. You can do
this in Control Panel. If the XP Firewall is your firewall of choice, you
will need to make an exception or possibly, while disconnected from the
Internet, shut down the firewall, rerun network setup, then enable the
firewall once again.

OK, it appears it IS the firewall!

so, now, HOW do I make an exception? The exceptions tab did not seem to have
an option for allowing the other computers on the nework access. Am I
missing something here?

TIA

Was there an option for "File and Print Sharing." If yes, place a check
next to it. NOTE: you may need to rerun network setup and if you do, be
sure you are not connected to the Internet and that the firewall is disabled
during network setup.

Yes, File and Print sharing was checked, but I DID have to re run network
set up wizard.. Seems to be back to normal now

Thanks for your help!
