I have two subnets connected by two routers. frequently, when I browse for
all computers I only see the distant subnet, and not the local subnet. then,
the local subnet will appear at random intervals.

Network places uses NetBIOS broadcasts or WINS to populate. Most routers
don't pass NetBIOS broadcasts and you'll need WINS to populate network
places. Even if the router passes NetBIOS broadcasts it is no guarantee to
fully populate network places. NetBIOS broadcasts are not reliable to fully
populate network places.
Are you using WINS?
I suggest you set up a WINS server at each location, point the clients at
each site to the local WINS server, then set the two WINS servers up as
replicating partners.

thanks for the reply. I have done that, and from the other DC on the remote
subnet I can see all computers on both subnets. But here on my local subnet,
I can't see the computer right next to me when browsing.

Do you have two WINS servers set up in push-pull replication?
Is this only one domain?
Here are some links and a tool to help you resolve this.

188001 - Description of the Microsoft Computer Browser Service:

188305 - Troubleshooting the Microsoft Computer Browser Service:

818092 - Description of NetBIOS Browsing Console (Browcon.exe):

WINS servers are set to push/pull and it is 1 domain. Some computers can see
all the other computers, some can't. Wouldn't care so much except I can't see
from MY computer and so I can't run my programs on the clients because the
computers don't show up. If I restart, then I can see all computers.
