I think I'm having the same problem. Are the gif files
those pictures that initially are described with a small
red x in a box. If so, I am having the same problem as
you. This is affecting my email as well as internet sites
using IE version 6.0.

I got into the registry, but was very confused on what I
was looking for - There was a giffile - with a CLSID file
under it, a Defaulticon file and a shell file under it.
When I opened them I had no idea what I was looking
for. There was also two GIFfilter files. I am such a novice
I have no idea what to look for or how to fix it.

Go to Start | Run and type this command:

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

regsvr32 /i shdoc401.dll

After a bit it should come back with a message that the DLL was registered.

If that doesn't fix it open regedit.exe and navigate to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif (note the dot before jpg)
For Content Type it should say "image/gif"

I am having this problem too. Some sites (Expedia.co.uk,
media.guardian.co.uk etc) I cannot view gif images.
However, it's only certain sites, and i cannot work out
what the problem is. I do have ZomeAlarm Pro firewall
running, but I do not have any of the ad blocking controls
activated. Please help - it's driving me crazy!

Darren,
Pictures Are Not Displayed on Web Sites in Internet Explorer

Are you using a Firewall or "filtering software"?

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]
Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium"
"Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"
Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption
Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer"
or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.
Symtom: Page cannot be displayed / Cannot find server or DNS Error

In the event you can not access a site or missing graphics and
you believe it may be due to an entry in the HOSTS file.

You can use a simple batch file to rename the HOSTS file "on-the-fly".

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter
