cant see external hard drive on usb

Hi am running windows xp, and when i plug in a external hard drive, i can
not see it anywhere to access it. It is recognised as the usb remover opens
up .

any ideas, thanks tim
 
Is the AC adapter plugged into the wall outlet?

Does it show up in My Computer?

Do you have USB 2?

Check Disk Management (Start -> Run -> diskmgmt.msc).
Look in the lower pane to see if your external hard drive needs
to be partitioned and formatted.

Hi Don Yes AC plugged in, lights on etc. does not show on my computer,
using usb 2
