can't see cd

my cd burner use to work. Now it says i need to put a empty cd in to be
burned it can't see it there and it does not play them either when i go to
trouble shoot it says my driver is working properly.

Perhaps it has gone to cd heaven. I have seen lots of cases where the
driver was working correctly, but the hardware was not.
