Can't save to CD

I've run into this exact same problem! My PC didn't
originally have a CD-R/RW drive. I purchased a Lite-On
CD-R/RW DVD-R/RW +R/RW combo drive and installed it. The
bundled software works fine and I've created many discs.
However Movie Maker doesn't recognize the drive even though
the OS does.

I'm scared that someone will tell me that I have to
reinstall XP to get Movie Maker to see the drive. BTW, I'm
running XP Home Edition (upgraded from 98ME).

Thanks,

Christopher

Hi there,

Movie Maker and indeed any program has to ask the operating system to
provide an interface to the hard drives etc. The operating system responds
with a dialoge box the one we are all familiar with where you can select a
file or save a file etc.. Movie Maker itself does not/cannot access this
information directly, it is done via an API (Application Provider
Interface).

Having said that, there is at least one condition other than a malformed
instalation of the software itself, that could stop you seeing the drive. I
realise that it is not likely, have you ever imposed conditions on who can
view this drive via the Administrators options?...its a bit thin I know.

With regards to the bad instalation of the software. I have just noticed
that you did an upgrade from 98 ME. I have no experience of ME, but I have
been told that it was full of all sorts of strange problems, exactly how
that would affect just one program in XP though would be something of a
mystery in itself.

This might be a dumb question, if so sorry, Have you used Windows Explorer
and actually looked at the contents of a disk on this drive? and have you
ever clicked on My Computer > Manage > Disc Management ? does the drive
show itself there?

Hi John,

I did a "clean upgrade" to XP home. In other words I
formatted the drive to NTFS (from FAT32) and then installed
XP. During the install I was prompted for my original OS
disks for proof. So there was no OS (or any other software
) on the drive when XP Home was installed. I only mention
the upgrade because I know past Windows upgrade versions
were different from full versions (and buggier).

I can see the drive in Explorer, My Computer and the
computer management console(s). I've been able to do
direct data disc burns and disc copies. All my audio/video
software has no problems seeing the drive. Only Movie Make
2 has the problem.

So you don't think that the problem lies in me installing
the burner AFTER Movie Maker 2 was installed? I no longer
have MM1 so I can't tell you anything about that version.

Hi there, This will have to be a quick one.......There is a condition such
that XP can mess up with burning disks.... the solution...pinched from some
one else's message is ...

This problem can be solved by disabling the built in CD wrinting software in
WinXP. Following is the procedure:
1. Start/Run/services.msc/right click on IMAPI CD-Burner Com Service and
select properties and select 'Disabled' in the 'Startup type' box/OK close
2. Start/Run/msconfig click on the 'Services' tab and uncheck the IMAPI
CD-Burning COM Service box.
So, make sure you know what you are doing, if you screw it up, you will have
all sorts of problems. What it does is remove the overhead created by XP,
this makes the instalation a little leaner and you will only be able to use
dedicated software for disk burning. Its how my system is set up (just
because of the overhead for me). Make sure as well, that you study it so
that you know how to reverse it should you want to
