I had a long thread up on my PC screen as a result of a Google Groups
search. I decided I'd copy it to my Pocket PC and read it elsewhere. I
was surprised to find after using File>Save As (with TXT chosen as the
file type), that I had a blank file apart from a single line referring
to the google thread.

Are some 'types' of page immune to a File Save?

(I then used clipboard to achieve aim.)

Perhaps that was it. Do you have Wrap enabled in Notepad?

I think that content providers can disable such things
to protect their intellectual property but in this case
perhaps you were also being affected by the fact
that Google pages are often constructed from frames.
E.g. just using View Source may only show you its frameset
and you need to use right-click, View Source to see
the actual message frame. Perhaps File, Save As.. Text file
works the same way and in that case you would only
be given the whatever normally appears as text in the
frameset. I suspect it would be mostly nothing
as you reported.

Hmm.. is this with Google Groups Beta?
Right-click, View Source doesn't work!?
The content isn't cached.
Do you have the IE Powertoy View Partial Source?
This worked:
1. right-click the message frame and choose
View Partial Source
2. Do a Select All and Copy of that.
3. On the Google page use Tools, Send Page by Link
4. Choose Read Only
5. In the resulting OE window, switch to the Source tab
6. Select the Frameset tag and paste in the source saved
by Step 2.
7. Click on the Preview tab.
8. Enjoy! <eg>
