I've got a PC that is running Win 98 with MS Office97. I'm
able to open XL & Word. I'm able to save a Word document,
but get an error when attempting to save an XL
spreadsheet. I reinstalled MS Office again, with out
unistalling it. I am still nable to save an XL
spreadsheet. I get the following error. Thanks for any
help.

Hi JD,

This isn't guaranteed to solve the problem, but it's worth a try. Use
Windows Explorer to search all of your hard disks for files with a .XLB
extension. Delete any that you find. Note that these may be a hidden files,
so you'll need to set Explorer to show hidden files before searching.

Excel uses these files to store information about its toolbar
configuration, but they frequently become corrupt and cause strange errors
like this. Excel will create clean new default versions after you delete the
old corrupt ones.

Thanks for the advice. I did that & no files where found
on the hard drive. I did make sure all files would be
shown. Any other suggestions?

Hi JD,

If you're running Excel you definitely have at least one .xlb file. Are
you sure you have Explorer set to show hidden files? For Excel 97 on Windows
98, the file should be located in your Windows directory and called
<username>8.xlb, where <username> is your username on that computer.

Once again, I seem to run into issues that are out of the
ordinary.

So I did the search again for the file on the problem PC,
still nothing. So I look on another PC & found the file,
like you said. So I go ahead & create the file, on the
problem PC, in the same directory that I found it on the
working PC. I just changed the name to the current user
name that is logged on. Once it is created with the
correct user name & 8 & ext, (jdoe8.xlb), I check in
explorer detail view & see that the file was last modified
in 1997, yet created today.

So I proceed to open XL, no problem as before, then I go
to SAVE AS & I get the following error and the program
closes out, again. Now something I failed to mention
before was that an exsisting file can be open and click on
the save icon, useing the current file name, and there is
no porblem.

Hi JD,

The fact that you really didn't have an XLB file makes me suspicious
that there's something wrong with your installation. Just reinstalling will
often not solve these problems, because it doesn't replace all of the files.
You should really uninstall Office, then use the utility described in the
following KB article to remove all remaining vestiges of it that the
uninstall program leaves behind:

http://support.microsoft.com?id=176823

Then reinstall again. Unless this problem is the result of a conflict
between Excel and some other software on your system, this should solve the
problem.
