can't save changes - table is linked

I have an Access 2002 database linked to an Access 97
database running on XP. Cannot modify a field size in
the 2002 database, when attempting receive the message
cannot save changes the table is linked. How can I make
a change to a field size?

Only by opening the database containing the tables (preferably using
Access97), and changing it there.

Your frontend database contains only a link to the table, not the
table itself, therefore the field size isn't available to change.
