Can't Save a Movie as a DV-AVI file

Just want to share the results of a tech support session today. It was with
someone who couldn't save a movie as a DV-AVI file, but could do it as a
WMV. It was a new e-machine with MCE2005 SP2 and MM2.1

Beyond not being able to render a fully edited 22 minute project, the
symptoms included:

- saving a single still image (JPG or BMP) on the timeline to a DV-AVI file
worked fine
- saving a single WMA music file, with no video clips, worked fine when
rendering it to a new WMA file
- when a still picture (JPG or BMP) was on the timeline's video track, with
the WMA file on the music track, the rendering stopped at about 2% and it
took Control-Alt-Delete to close MM2.

There were 3 codecs listed in the Compatibility tab... two from a Nero
installation and one other... by unchecking all 3, all renderings went
fine.... obviously a codec related issue, but with a project as simple as a
single BMP files with a WMA for music.

LOL

Another example of how broken Movie Maker is....I've just used your example
in MovieXone (a very old program) MovieDV (a three year old program) and
Nero (a few days old) and none of them failed..............

Now done it in Movie Maker...did not fail.

Because you can prove that in one instance the rule does not hold true then
the rule itself is invalid.....not much of a tech support solution I would
say. Perhaps a lucky break

Truthfully, I am not an Instant Expert, But I know someone who is going to
have to try a LOT harder

You mean you went out and bought an E-Machine to try to duplicate the problem?
Yousa! Yousa!

Well now Flame Starter,

It would take a certain kind of person to think that the badge on the
outside of the machine has anything to do with what goes on inside the
machine. But, for what its worth, I have 3, that'sTHREE, e-machines all
3GHz as well as a range of other machines. Would it make you feel better if
I listed those as well?

Have a nice day

But in the case of an E-Machine? lol
Quite possibly the crappiest PC to hit the market since Packard Bell. :-)

By the way I think that was a joke by dickmr, never seen him try to start a
flame war.

Hello,

Yes they are bare minimum but they are great for shoving in the corner
with a job to do and forget them untill the job is done

Would you belive, yesterday we found a machine just sitting there, no
hard drives but otherwise everything present...I have no idea what it is, it
seems to have 1.5GB ram and a GForce4 card....going to power it up
today....I mean, how can you forget what it is...A Very Senior moment.

I know that when I was in sales the E Machine's were the ones I always tried
to shy my customers away from simply because the return rate was by far the
highest of any of our machines. Plus I personally have seen them actually
get really hot and catch on fire on 3 different occasions!
The company, at least back then, had so little confidence in their own
machines that their one year warranty wasn't even for repair it was for
replacement. Then the piece of junk units were returned to them, repaired,
and sold as refurbished pieces of junk instead of new pieces of junk.

Nope, wasn't throwing flames. But you guys have me thinking. I have a
'pristine' Apple IIe in my basement! That thing cost more in 1984 than my
new Sony setup (not counting the monitor of course).....I'm hoping they all
disappear so I can sell that thing to the Smithsonian! ha ha ha ha The
change in just 20 years is amazing; I don't think we can imagine what will
be 20 years from now.

I didn't think you were throwing flames.
I know the feeling about technology.
I remember when I first started in home computing. My Radio Shack TRS80 with
tape drive was the absolute best of the best in home computing! Then
eventually I could afford the $150 to add a 5 1/4" floppy drive to it and oh
my god TOP OF THE LINE! lol
I have two, don't ask me why because I have absolutely no idea, old 8086XT
computers with dual 5 1/4" disk drives in my basement. One has a 5MB hard
drive in it and the last time I plugged it in the thing still hummed to
life. Talk about antiquing to the Smithsonian.
-Wojo

Oh my gosh! I remember 8086's! I haven't even HEARD that phrase in more
years than I care to count! LOL
My first pc (that I bought) was a Radio Shack with 1 meg of Ram! Should have
kept it.

Right now, in my guest room, I have a 133megahertz machine that someone gave
me and I can't bring myself to throw away because it still works! LOL

Rach

uhoh, showing your age along with us now Rach? :-)
The Radio Shack TRS80 didn't even have that much RAM. When it came out they
still hadn't broken the 640k road block.
