Can't run Search

I'm looking at a friends PC and the Search function fomr
the start menu and withing Explorer seems to be disabled.

How do I get it back?

Thanks for the speedy reply but those suggestions haven't
fixed it completely. I've found I can load the search from
Explorer but not from the Start menu. If I click on search
then the PC appears to slow down while it tries to do
something but a window never appears and nothing show in
Task Manager.
 
One other thing I forgot to mention. The icon for the
internet explorer doesn't show up on the desktop even if I
go into customize desktop and check it's selected there.
