Can't run/install Microsoft Recovery Console

I've tried installing the MRC and tried running it from a WindowsXP bootable
CD (I'm actually running XP Pro though). Can't get either one of them to
work. When I run the bootable CD, I get a message with three choices. The
second choice says to press F10. I do that - then I get a prompt that asks
for my password. I type in my Windows Logon password - but it won't take
it. So I just press Enter (no password) and it gives me a C: prompt. From
there, I can run chkdsk and some other apps. Also I can see my C: drive.
But the MRC is nowhere to be found. Ideally, I'd like to have the MRC as a
choice when I boot. Second choice is to use a bootable XP CD. I followed
MS's instructions - but can't get MRC to run at all. Can someone help? I
would be willing to call someone because what's actually happening would
take too long to type in a posting. Thanks........

I did create the integrated install a few days ago - but it doesn't work.
When I select MRC, I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. At that
point, the PC is frozen and I have to reboot.

* Try Start|Run

D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

(where D is the drive letter for your CD-Rom drive)

You may need to create the integrated install and install the RC from there.

Theoretically, MRC is on my machine - but it seems like boot.ini isn't
pointing to it properly. What if I posted my current boot.ini - perhaps
someone could tell me what's wrong and how to fix it. Here it is:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional - Utility Drive" /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Both installations of Windows XP are identical (SP2). One (Utility) is only
about 5GB in size - I use it to back up my Primary drive from. The problem
is that, when I choose Microsoft Recovery Console, the screen shows a
blinking cursor and freezes at that point. It did this both before and
after I did the integration. Something is still wrong. I can't get to the
MRC this way. It used to work until I installed the boot manager. Then I
got the blinking cursor. Uninstalling it didn't change that.

..

Are both windows at the same service pack level?

boot.ini is correct.

When you said;

"So I just press Enter (no password) and it gives me a C: prompt. From
there, I can run chkdsk and some other apps."

This means you have sucessfully started the recovery console.

Sorry, Dave - but I did mention the boot manager in one of the earlier posts
on this subject. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. Any ideas? The boot manager
is uninstalled now. Is there any way to search for remnants that might be
messing up the MRC?

"used to work until I installed the boot manager"

Ahh.... The rest of the story..

I'd try the boot manager's web site faq

V-Com tech support is by email - so I sent my problem to them. Don't expect
to hear back until at least Tuesday.

QUESTION: Why doesn't MS just include the MRC as standard fare? Seems
reasonable to me.....
