Can't run Disk Defragmenter or Defraggler

Windows XP Home, fully updated, 65% free space.

Neither the Disk Defragmenter or the 3rd party Defraggler will execute. Both
"endounter a problem and must close" shortly after clicking the Defragment
button.

I know I ran into this a couple of years ago, but no notes and no memory.

Any thoughts?
 
Same computer as the one where you had a Trojan FakeAlert infection (and
probably still do)?
