Can't run any wizard: "Permission Denied" (AccessXP)

Well, as the subject says....

Briefly, when I try to run *any* wizard, I get a simple dialog, stating
"Permission Denied", to which I can only click "OK".

I suspect this is a windows (XP) problem rather than an actual Access
one, as the error only occurs in my power user (and any other) account.
It goes away if I am logged on (to windows) as Administrator.

Full Permission for Everyone is set on the drive and folder(s)
containing Access, however, I keep my application files on a seperate
drive to the OS. Any secret little folders/files, etc on the OS drive I
should know about that would impact this error?

Going mad here. TIA.

Hi Dave,

I have not gotten around to installing Office XP
on a WinXP machine, so cannot test here

so.....
if you do not mind trying a "wild hunch"

-Go into Control Panel
-Click on Administrative Tools
-Click on Local Security Settings
-Expand Local Policies
-Click on Security Options
-Scroll down the list in right frame
until reach Network Access: Sharing and
Security for local accounts
-Right-mouse click on it and choose Properties
-change from
local users authenticate as guests
to
local users authenticate as themselves
-reboot

Again....this is a wild hunch!

Good luck,

Gary Walter

Thanks, Gary, but unfortunately that's not it. (In fact, NA:S&SfLA was
already set to users as themselves)

Cheers anyhow.

@twister01.bloor.is.net.cable.rogers.com>,
NOSPAM_djsteele@NOSPAM_canada.com says...
If I recall correctly, you must install Access separately for each user.
Before I start fiddling..... why would that be the case? Surely since I
can access Access (sorry 'bout that!) from any other acct on the box, I
should not have to install seperately for each user????

Seems like an odd solution, though I'm happy to give it a go if no more
(read, "easier" !) solutions come my way. I'll let the group know.

IIRC, the wizard needs to access some values from registry for the user
currently logged in, and it looks under HKCU as opposed to HKLM. When the
keys that are created by the installer are not there (which would be the
case when Access is installed under a different user name), the wizard
tries to create them but fails with the "Permission Denied" error.

Or something like that.

To see what's going on, you can try to use RegMon from sysinternals.com to
monitor access to the registry. As to the fix, you may be able to
export/import the relevant registry keys as opposed to doing the entire
reinstall for each user.

Also search the archives at groups.google.com, I believe this problem has
been discussed before.

Thanks to all the many and varied folk who replied to this thread, and
also the number who sent helpful emails. I tried all your suggestions,
but, as one emailer from another ng I frequent agreed, and I know some
of you suspected, it was indeed a problem with the way I had my System
set up.

As elucidated later in the thread, my problem (for those of you who have
come in late) essentially boiled down to having WindowsXP installed on a
separate (logical) drive from the traditional c:\Program Files
directory, with which I had jiggered, and placed as the root elsewhere.

Long story short, Access didn't like it.

So it was off to Partition Magic and DI to work a bit of wizardry and
then restoring a (way too old!) backup image of the OS with which I
hadn't ****ed royally (apologies, Liz). And then doing things the way
Bill intended, i.e. leaving the dir structure of the OS well and good
enough.... y'know?

Anyhoo. Tx for all your help. Hope this thread helps someone else out
there.

We're your friends... and we're only a Google away!

And we're watching you.

Cheers,
Dave
