I tried to restore to an earlier date using the restore
function in XP Home edition. everything acted like it
was going to work but when the computer rebooted I got a
message that the restore wouldn't work and that nothing
would be changed. I tried all the dates that were bold
in the month of October but none of them worked.

The Win XP System Restore is a lot better than its predecessor, but there
are still several things that can go wrong. Here's the broadest
troubleshooting article for it: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302796

I have several more System Restore articles linked on
http://aumha.org/win5/kbcomm.htm - they refer to slightly different symptoms
and situations. You might want to check them out. But I think the general
one above is your best shot.

If you get no resolution from that, I suggest you disable System Restore and
reboot -- to wipe out all existing System Restore data and zero out all
existing restore points -- then reenable it and go forward.
