Can't resolve domain names

I can't get my Win 2k machine to connect to the net.

I just installed a NetGear ethernet card and connected it
to a Netgear router. The router has been my means of
connecting my WinXP machine to the net for 6 months or so.
Now I'm trying to add the Win 2k machine.

I worked through this with Netgear tech support last night
and we confirmed that the card and LAN are working fine.
I can ping the router and I can ping my XP machine, and my
XP machine can ping the Win2k machine. But when I try to
ping past the router (yahoo.com, 4.2.2.2, or 4.2.2.1) I
get nothing. Also, when the Win2k is connected to the
LAN, the WinXP machine can't connect to the net.

The Netgear tech suggested that I need to install an
upgrade or patch to the Win2k machine, but since it's not
able to connect to the net, I can't figure out how to do
that. Although this machine (WinXP) does connect, I don't
know how to download any upgrades for a Win2k machine from
this XP machine.

Since the Win2k software is OEM, MS won't give me any info
about how to proceed. Does anyone have any answers out
there?

Thanx.

Do you have Internet connection sharing on the Win2k machine? Or a firewall?

Thanks for your reply

I do not have a firewall on the Win2k machine. I don't
know what "Internet connection sharing" is.

Thanks again for your reply

it might help if you did ipconfig/all on both machines and posted the
results. that may give us more of an idea of what you are missing. a stock
win2k installation should not need any upgrade to access the interenet via a
router as long as the network card is installed and you can ping the two
machines from each other and the router from both of them.

Here's what I get from the Win XP machine:

do you have your router set up as a dns proxy? does the xp machine use the
router for dns??

one thing to check on, you say you can't ping beyond your router... some
isp's have blocked icmp traffic because of the volume of it that was caused
by the blaster and welchia viruses so that may not be a valid test beyond
your router any more. surfing, telnet, or ftp would be a better test which
they would not block.

I don't know whether my router is set up as a DNS proxy.
It's not something we discussed last night.

As for the blocking aspect, I checked with Comcast
yesterday and they said all I needed to do was make sure
the router was assigning separate IPs to each machine.

As for surfing instead of pinging. I can't surf or ping
from either machine when they are both connected.

ok, try getting the full ipconfig/all from the xp machine, what you put in
before didn't have the dns info for that machine which could be important.
also check the router setup, it should show you what it is using for dns and
an ip address from comcast.

you say you can't surf or ping when 'both' are connected... what happens
when each one is connected by itself?

Here's the IPConfig /all for the XP machine.

I'm not sure what info from the router setup is pertainant.

On the LAN page I've got the following info:

DHCP Setup
DHCP Server checked
Pool Starting Address 192.168.1.1
Count 32
Primary DNS Server 0.0.0.0
Secondary DNS Server 0.0.0.0

LAN TCP/IP
IP Address 192.168.1.1
RIP Direction Both
IP Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
RIP Version RIP-1
Multicast None

Finally, when the XP is connected by itself, it surfs and
pings everything fine. When the Win2k machine is
connected "with" the XP machine. It pings the router and
the XP machine. I'll have to check what pinging the Win2k
machine can do when it is connected by itself. I know it
can't surf, but I haven't checked what it can ping.

I'll loose connectivity for a bit to try this. I'll post
back with those results. I've got an appointment this
morning, so I'll have that next post just after 10:00.

Thanks for stickin with me on this.

Here's the results of the solo Win2K Ping

I can ping the router (192.168.1.1) and itself
(192.168.1.3), but nothing beyond the router (yahoo.com or
4.2.2.2).

the only thing odd i see is the node type = peer-peer for the xp machine, i
would expect that to be 'broadcast'. i don't see how that would affect the
w2k machine though.

the next steps i would try are:
1. ipconfig/release then /renew to see if that refreshes it.
2. try pings with large data packets in case it is a marginal cable or nic
problem
3. try manually assigning the ip address and give it the isp's dns addresses
directly
4. remove the adapter and reinstall it.

i'm afraid i don't have much after that and i'm going to be busy the rest of
the day so may not get back here for a while. maybe someone else will have
some more ideas.
