i have windows 98 and my avast anti virus is detecting trksrv98.exe in
my windows directory as a virus (it's really adware, i think.).
i've done some research on this and found it does no real harm to the
computer. however it does cause pop ups to appear while surfing the
net. also it downloads other files to the windows directory. it
seems that avast cannot remove this file. i've run ad-aware 6 a few
times, too. i want tksrv98.exe off my computer! how do i remove it?

Which one?

Okay.

Which one?

That's good, care to give us a hint as to what we are talking
about?

Probably to update itself or provide new ads to display. Removal
can be as simple as deleting the program file, or as difficult as a
complete wipe and reinstall of the software platform.

You *could* delete it from DOS, but I wouldn't want to recommend
any such action without first knowing what we are dealing with. More
than a filename is needed - the malware or adware name would help.

Start the computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu
appears and select "Command Prompt". Then type
"rename c:\windows\trksrv98.exe trksrv98.bad" and press "Enter".
Then type "win" to start Windows.

Running in SAFE mode as suggest above is right. However, you might need to
tell the Command Prompt "attrib -r -h -s trksrv98.exe" to make it visible
and permit it to be deleted.
