Have 2 nics, 3com for internet via cable modem and netgear for lan
the netgear card was accidentally removed and subsequently
re-installed
although there is only 1 netgear card in the pc and device manager
(incl device manager in safe mode and view hidden devices)
either the registry or some other control device now thinks I've got 4
netgear cards according to my firewall and nat winroute

how do I remove the phantom 3 that don't exist?

Remove from where?

first of all I managed to find out how to uninstall them from winroute

however
From devices you can Uninstall drivers or even
remove things you cannot see by View\Hidden devices.

from my post:
although there is only 1 netgear card in the pc and device manager
(incl device manager in safe mode and view hidden devices)

when i go to configure the 'new' card, I am told by windows that a
network card with this ip already exists and that it might be
dangerous to install the new card with this address if the original
card becomes operable

that's why i'd like to remove the phantom card
From RRAS you can remove IP interfaces from "General"
(the GUI tree structure is wrong.)

am afraid i dont know what rras is
Where are these devices/NICs giving you trouble?
the netgear card, my lan, with nat for my networked pc

If you remove it -- there's a view all in the Add/Remove
Hardware wizard too, I believe -- then the problem will
go away.

If you just read that IP dialog carefully (it's got a double
negative or something else misleading in it -- ok, means
no, I am not satisified) then you can just override it.

It harms nothing IF the other card has been physically
removed.
