Can't remove memory in WIN2K

I wish to remove some physical memory for other use but
WIN2K will not allow it. When I try to boot with the
reduced memory the system hangs at the first
screen "Loading Windows" (the first b/w screen). None of
the options, "Debug, etc." works. I've tried entering CMOS
setup to be sure to record the change. I find no help in
Windows. No such problem occured when I added the memory,
but now I can't remove it.

Is there a way past this? I don't want to rebuild the
system. Help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Sometimes RAM has to be used in pairs. This is most likely a hardware issue
with your computer manufacturer. I would check with them.....Windows
shouldn't care about the ram......

Thanks for suggestion. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell
from my DELL documentation, my remaining RAM (2x128Meg
modules) is a perfectly legal configuration. I'll check
again.

I had a similar issue with some new Dell machines. I had to put in some
blanks so it would work but my problem was happening before Windows even
came up.

Scott,

Thanks again, that got it. For some reason both previously
working legal arrangements (128M+64M or 128M+128M+64M)
worked again. The newer arrangement (128M+128M) did not
work, even though it too was shown as legal in the Dell
book. Who knows what lurks in the minds of the gods?
