Can't remove line I created out of hyphens

To separate sections of a document I had been creating lines by making a
string of hyphens, which Word (Office 2003) would complete as a line running
across the page. However, it seems that if I do so, and then add text
before the line that pushes the line across the bottom of the page, Word
wants to add another line. That line won't go away: if I try to backspace
over it I lose the paragraph format, and then when I recreate the paragraph
separation the line returns.
