I'm trying to do a lookup on data in a lookup table that
was taken from a very old version of Excel. it doesn't
recognise the cell contents. I have tried, clearing
formats, cleaning the range with the =CLEAR function and
copying and pasting values only or formats only from other
cells . The only way to get it to work is retype the cell
entries but are several hundred of them. If I insert a
new column next to the corrupt data and type the vlookup
function in, it just displays the text I've typed (even
though I've typed the full =vlookup function) It doesn't
seem to recognise that the cell has data in it although it
displays on the formula bar.

Has anybody else had this problem? How on earth can I fix
it????

Thanks in advance

Diane

Hi
if we are talking about numbers try the following:
- select the cells
- goto 'Format - Cells' and choose 'General' as format
- select an empty cell and copy this cell
- select your values
- goto 'Edit- Paste Special' and choose 'Add'
