Can anyone tell me how to remove the residual SP2 folders and their files "update.exe"? There are multiple folders on all my drives that don't do anything (I can rename them) but not delete them. How can I do this?

Hi,

What residual SP2 folders? SP2 is not yet available to the public, it is
still in testing. What, specifically, are they named, and where are they
located?

Hi,

Do you get an error message when you try to delete them? If so, what is it?

Cannot delete update.exe: Access is denie

Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use

It's not a running process and I am logged in with Admin priveledges.

Hi,

Try taking ownership of it. Right-click the folder, select properties. Go to
the security tab and click advanced. You can take control of the folders on
the owner tab. For the security tab to appear in a WinXP Pro system, you
must disable simple file sharing in the control panel/folder options/view
tab. For a WinXP Home system, you must restart in safe mode and logon as
administrator. More details here:

Hi tonyo,

Create a folder called 'trouble'
move all the tmp files in there.
Open a command prompt on the parent folder
Open task manager and with it close windows explorer
on the command prompt, type rd trouble
Open a new task in task manager called explorer.exe

That should get rid of them.
If you cannot, boot to the Recovery Console and remove the folder with
the troublesome files (typing: rd trouble) from there.

Also go to Kelly's site:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

and scroll down to line 39 'Delete an undeletable file on Windows XP.'

Good luck

I have the same problem: I have a folder I can't delete, it says access denied (I put it inside another folder, and when I try to delete THAT folder it says "wrong parameter." I tried restarting in safe mode, and when I do, although I am an administrator, my profile is not in the list. So i signed in under the one that does say "administrator" and even though the folder shows when I drill down through directories, when I right click the folder it says it can't be found! There seems no way I can get rid of this D*MN FOLDER!!! Help, please!!!

Hi,

Try this pictorial "Delete A File That Is Seemingly Undeletable"
http://www.theeldergeek.com/delete_undeletable_file.htm

Also try opening a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd) change
directories to 'the parent folder, open Task manager and end
explorer.exe from there, and then type:
rd folder_name

Then open explorer.exe by opening a new task in task manager.

Or go to Kelly's site

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

and scroll down to line 39 'Delete an undeletable file on Windows XP'

Hope this helpsOn Sun, 29 Feb 2004 05:51:11 -0800, access denied, but
