Can't reinstall XP because error message states what I have installed is newer

I have reinstalled XP on a machine that I had hoped would be used by my kids
but ever since the reinstall I have run into many issues so (e.g. I always
get a message at reboot that asks "Which operating system do you want to
use? 1. XP Home Edition or 2. XP Home Edition). I thought I'd re-reinstall
to see if something went wrong during the initial reinstallation. I tried to
reinstall XP today and I got an error that says the version of Windows that
I have installed is newer than what I have on the disk and it won't let me
do it. How can I reinstall XP again? Will it fix the strange menu that asks
which operation system I'd like to use?

Control Panel|System|Advanced|Startup and Recovery|Settings|Edit and remove
the line for the OS you no longer want to start.

Else

To do a clean install, boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom. Setup inspects
your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to install the Setup
and driver files. When the Windows XP Professional screen appears, press
ENTER to set up Windows XP Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows XP Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network.

What was the reason for the re-installation? It's not a trivial task,
is rarely a "fix"for anything, and is rife with side-effects.

To fix that, edit C:\Boot.ini to remove the reference to the
installation you don't want to run anymore. If there's only one OS
reference in C:\Boot.ini, NTLDR will not pause on that menu.

Do make a backup copy of Boot.ini first, and take care not to render
the system unbootable!
