I am passing through composite video through miniDV Sony
TRV30, DV out firewire to computer Windows XP. Moviemaker
2 knows the device and will only record if there is a
tape in (of course it will play a tape if it is in). I
can see the video on the capture screen. Do I have to
record to tape first? Why can't I simply record on the
fly? Help!
Thanks.

Here's a cheerful little earful from David:

You might try getting Windows Media Encoder, which is kinda big brother to
MM. It's a free download from http://microsoft.com/windowsmedia/

Connect the A/V cable(composite) that came with the camcorder to the VHS and
the A/V jack of the camcorder. Connect the 1394 cable to the PC and the
camcorder. Then switch to VCR mode. Hit the menu button and select A/V->DV
OUT then try to capture.
