When I try to get my e-mail, I get the following message:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server:
'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error
Number: 0x800C013A

Does anyone have any suggestions? Gary, are you out there?

Are you sure Comcast supports port 995?
The Comcast information I found online indicates that the
incoming mail server should be on the standard port 110.

Well, they do qualify it by saying "when you are not on the
Comcast High-Speed Internet network." But I can't
imagine them requiring a laptop owner to reconfigure
every time the laptop location is changed back to home
after being elsewhere.

How does one going about changing ports? Is that what I need to do to fix
this problem?

No guarantee that it will fix the problem, bit it wouldn't hurt
to try.
In Windows Mail go to Tools > Accounts > select the account >
Properties > Advanced. Uncheck "This server requires a secure
connection (SSL)" (two places).
Change the outgoing port number to 587.
Change the incoming port number to 110. Click Apply.
Go to the Servers tab. Click the last box: "My server requires
authentication". Click OK. Click Close.
Try receiving mail.
If you get an error message, copy it and post it here.

Gary:

I followed your instructions and listed below and received the following
error message:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server:
'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x800C013A

The "unknown" error part tends too implicate your antivirus program.
Read http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
If you have McAfee or Norton antivirus, uninstall it. Reboot and try
Windows Mail again. Once you get your email working properly,
download and install a less troublesome antivirus program such as the
free Avast. Whichever antivirus program you keep, be sure to
disable its email scanning option.

I followed these instructions to the letter and tried Windows Mail. I was
unable to receive any mail and had the following error:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server:
'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x800C013A

What do you think of the idea of uninstalling Windows Mail and installing
Outlook Express v6? I had none of these problems with OE.

If that is not feasible, then maybe the best thing to do is to give up on
any mail client and use Web Mail. I have no problems with that.

That isn't possible.

Get a Gmail address, it is a very robust, portable and fully functioned.

Then you will be up and running in no time.

Once you have sorted that there is a tried and tested simple
set up for Windows Mail use of the ID that works in conjunction
with Web access on the road.

Note. These instructions are for OE but they work fine with Windows Mail.

Are you by any chance using SpamCop, or any other anti-spam application?

Truly portable Web mail such a Gmail
that can be accessed by POP3 compliant software
is the way to go and works a treat with WM.
