I can send from MS Mail but can't receive from my verizon.net acct. which is
enabled. Help!

Any error message? If so, copy it and post it here.

Meantime, read and heed http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
If you have McAfee or Norton antivirus, uninstall it, reboot, and try
receiving mail.
After you get your email working, you will need to install
a non-intrusive antivirus program such as the free Avast.
Whichever antivirus you select, be sure to NOT enable the email
scanning option.

Any error message when you try to download messages from
the server? What happens when you send yourself an email?

Gary VanderMolen

Gary, I don't get an error message. Just nothing comes into the inbox.
I try to send myself a message to my verizon.net address and it gets
forwarded to my hotmail acct. but I can't get it to come into the MS Mail
inbox. Thanks for your help so far.

Now we're getting somewhere. Previously you didn't mention
that your Verizon mail forwards to your Hotmail account.
Usually the Hotmail accounts are free ones that can't be accessed
from within Windows Mail.
By any chance, is this one of the special "partner" arrangements
between Verizon and MSN Premium mail? See
http://www.verizon.net/micro/betterway/faq.asp
I'm not very familiar with how these hybrid accounts are set up
as far as mail servers, etc. Perhaps someone else reading this
has more insight in this issue.

Gary, Yes this is one of the special partner arrangements. Verizon
forwards verizon.net email to my hotmail acct. but I can't get either one
to forward to MS Mail. I think I want mail to go to ms mail becuase of
it's better interface and formatting etc. but maybe it's not possible or
worth it. Thanks for your help!

Has Verizon given you any instructions as to how you are supposed
to retrieve mail sent to the Hotmail account? I'm particularly
interested in whether they say it can be done with any email program
using a standard POP3 account. I'm having trouble finding any
Hotmail mail server information from Verizon on their website.

Gary VanderMolen

I had a "live chat" and it made no sense to me at all. I'm wondering if
maybe I can get gmail or yahoo mail to be retrievable but can't seem to set
that up either. I'm confused as to which type of email acct. is which and
the difference between a "pop" acct. and other accts. Don't know if it's me
or if I'm trying to do something that can't be done but I thought that the
former ms mail - Outlook - was capable of retrieval from Hotmail and Verizon.

Gmail is straightforward to set up by following these instructions...
(don't worrty that they were written for OE)

Follow them as closely as you can.

nb....

Did you click 'Save Changes' after enabling POP in Google Mail? To ensure
that Google Mail can communicate with your mail client, make sure you click
'Save Changes' on the 'Forwarding and POP' tab in your Google Mail settings.

Let's back up a bit.

Verizon typically provides standard pop3 service for its DSL of Dial Up
customers using standard internet pop3/smtp protocol when ***not***
partnered with MSn(or Yahoo or AOL)

A Verizon customer also has the option to sign up for the MSn partner
account(before or after signing up for Verizon Isp service) which combines
the internet access with an MSn Premium subscription(i.e. an http account
and the MSn/Verizon software that provides email services access for
Verizon, MSn and Hotmail or both).

Any messages forwarded to Hotmail or MSn Premium are retreivable via the
MSn/Verizon software, OE or OL for the for the http account using http Msn
settings, or the Verizons or Hotmail web interfaces
-http messages are not retreivable via Windows Mail.
- forwarded Verizon messages to Hotmail are retreivable via Windows
Mail.

When using the Verizon/MSn Partnered software the following also apply:
- A Verizon primary pop3 account message can be forwarded to Gmail and
retreived in Windows Mail.
- A Verizon primary pop3 account message can be forwarded to Yahoo email
address and retreived in Windows Mail if and only if one also signs up for
Yahoo! Plus Mail($20/yr) which enables pop3 access for that specific Yahoo
account.

Thus in short summary
- in XP, Outlook or Outlook Express were capable of retreiving both pop3
and http mail due for a Verizon/MSn partnered account.
- in Vista, Windows Mail is only capable of retreiving pop3 not http
thus you should be capable of setting up your primary Verizon.net account(if
its a pop3 acccount) in Windows Mail but you will not be able to retrieve
any messages forwarded to hotmail.

Problem fixed! the problem turned out to be that I had verizon.net mail
configured to forward email to my hotmail acct. once that was removed ms
mail started showing mail retrieval! thanks for all of your suggestions
and help.

Julian, I believe I did check save changes. I also downloaded the google
gmail wizard and followed their directions. I will go through it again and
see if I missed anything. thanks.

Thanks for that explanation. I knew it was complex.
Sure glad I don't do tech support for Verizon customers.

I couple of times I was going to ask you why you forward to
Hotmail, but then I figured you must have a good reason.

Gary VanderMolen

Winston, Verizon, in my case and I am using the MSN Premium partnership
deal, does forward messages to Hotmail but it it then precluded from being
retrieved by MS Mail. When I tried to get MS Mail to retrieve from
Hotmail I got an error message saying that Hotmail is not compatible with MS
Mail. Thanks very much for your comments and help.

You're welcome..

One correction, left the word 'not' out of one sentence in paragraph four.
It should read:
- forwarded Verizon messages to Hotmail are ***not** retrievable via Windows
Mail.

To make it even worse..if one has a legacy pop3 msn account and installs MSn Premium via a direct download or partnered MSn premium software and uses that same address for the installation, it will convert the legacy pop3 account to http. Access can then only be accomplished via http capable email clients. I.e. If pop3 is desired, never install MSn Premium(Explorer) or use the address to sign up for partnered software.
