can't receive email

I've been using Windows email for a month with no problem, until today when i
can not receive any email. It says receiving 1 of 12 messages, but then I get
the following error message: Account: 'Windows Mail', Server:
'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x800CCC19

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not very compatible with
Windows Mail, and will over time cause assorted problems.
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be disabled.

we have Norton 360 . Is it common for it to suddenly cause problems when it
has been working fine all along?

This sometimes means you need to log on using webmail instead of Windows
Mail, and then delete the oldest message you haven't received.

Norton is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
The scenario that causes symptoms to appear in Windows Mail requires
a complex mix of circumstances, so the timeframe involved is highly
variable.

The only way you can prove or disprove that Norton is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:

Another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to the adverse effects of aggressive antivirus products:

In any case you must disable any antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:

I have tried this, but can't get onto verizon email?? Never had that problem
before, either...

I can't even get connected to the verizon email website to put my password
in. I am going to contact verizon. I did go to the library and could access
my email there, deleted all the emails out there (nothing unusual), but still
seem to have the same problem. I need to work on the Norton tips you had
given me but haven't had a chance today (summer vacation with 3 kids home
makes it hard to get anything done on the computer!) Thanks again for all
your suggestions.

You can't go to websites on your computer? Sounds like something
other than Windows Mail is broken.

I can get to any website except verizon.

I never even get to the login page - I just get that little "connecting" icon
(the circle spinning aroung, if you know what I mean) but it never connects.

See if you can get to these, which may or may not give you help
other than giving you websites to test:

http://netservices.verizon.net/portal/link/help/selection

http://webmail.verizon.net/signin/

You may need to start Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then
Delete Browsing History, then one or more of the buttons
this gives you; or the equivalent in whatever other browser
you are using. Note that this is likely to make the computer
forget some saved passwords, though, so make sure you have
a record of all the passwords first. Restart Internet Explorer
or your other browser afterwards.

If this doesn't fix the problem, you may have to tell Verizon
which websites you are unable to reach, and ask them to check
if these websites are even working.
