A company that I do some work for occasionally sends me calendar items.
When I receive them at home on outlook 2000, they do not come in as
calendar items. They appear more like a text message.

Is there some kind of setting I need to change in order to accept their
calendar items and have them go onto my calendar at home?

They are using outlook 2000 and they run exchange 2003.
I'm on outlook 2000 at home. No exchange server.

Perhaps they're not sending them to you in the correct format. Have them
examine the format they are using and whether they have your home address
defined in their contacts as being able to accept the proper format.

I'm not sure that there's a way to do that actually. They are just
creating a new calendar item and assing my email into the "Invite
attendees" list.

Then your name is in their contacts. They must examine that entry
(specifically by double-clicking the email address) to make sure they're
sending mail to you in the correct format.

How do I do that specificaly? I double clicked and looked through all
the menu items.
I don't see anything to do what you speak of.

I did find this, but I'm not sure I can get them to remember to do this
each time:

When creating a new calendar item, select Actions à Forward as
iCalendar; otherwise, to use the Accept/Decline and viewing when others
are free/busy, try in Outlook under Tools à Options.. à Calendar
Options... and explore the Internet Free/Busy setup. This used to be a
free feature you can use via MSN but now I think it has to be
configured for a location on the server.

Your sender should open your Contact record and double-click the E-Mail
address. They should see an "E-mail Properties" dialogue with an "Internet
format" drop-down at the bottom. That drop down should not say "Send plain
text only". Best, in my opinion, is for it to say "Let Outlook decide the
best sending format".
