I have been trying to reinstall windows 2000 on my
computer. For some reason it will not read the disk. The
CD-ROM will read any disk I put in except my windows 2000
CD. I have tried the disk on many other computers and it
works fine. When I run the disk it says please insert CD
even though it is already in. Any help would be great.
Thanks.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

dave, this seems to be you answer to everything, this does not help her at
all.

Jennifer, if your win2k is still working do a search for an I386 directory
on your computer. If there is then you can install from there, just run
winnt32.exe from there or setup from the directory that contains the I386
directory. If you can't find this directory, try to copy the CD into a
folder on your hard drive and install from there.
Try cleaning the back of the CD being careful not to scratch it. Also it is
not necessary to delete your current NTFS partition you can install over
your existing system or to a new folder or to a different partion.

hope this is a little more helpful.

You have to start somewhere.

I hae the same problem as a laot of people, Win2k was working, crashed
and now I cant reinstall, bluescreen, stop messages, the setup goes o
, but wont install or cant install certain files, etc etc. I hav
resorted to formatting my 40 gig Fujitsu drive, partioning it 5GB an
35GB. Still cant install it. My question, well the main one is, yo
say
"if your win2k is still working" Mine isnt so what can I do, do yo
suggest creating a folder and copying the CD while in DOS mode?

Any ideas gratefully received

If the 40gig is your only drive and you formatted both partitions with NTFS,
then you can't use Dos unless you have Doctor Dos or some other utility that
will allow Dos to read a NTFS partition. If they are FAT32, yes copy the
entire contents of the cd onto the 35 g partition, using the xcopy command.

How do you know it "can't install certain files" are you getting an error
msg
or just getting a blue screen?
If your doing a clean install and getting a blue screen, what is the error
msg,
these are most likely caused by hardware problems. Try removing any hardware
that's not required i.e. sound card, modem, network card, extra drives etc.
Have you ever installed from this cd?
