Can't read dvd

Hi, i have this problem, when inserting a dvd (movie or data) nothing
appears, it seems like my combo dvd didn't notice that a dvd disc were
inserted.

Could be defective DVD drive.
Make/model of drive?
Age of system?
 
When's the last time you updated the firmware?

I had a DVDRW drive once that would not burn DVDs but would burn CDs (after
working fine for a year). The drive was defective. I tossed it out and
bought a new one. To shortcut the troubleshooting process...put the drive in
a different PC (if possible) and see if the problem follows the drive.
