Hi,
I have a Pavilion XH535 and about a month ago it had trouble reading cd's,
but it eventually would. Now it won't read them at all. My Computer sees
the cd, and when I put a disk in it, it spins but then says there is no CD
in the drive. It's a DVD/CD combo read only drive.

I deleted and then reinstalled the driver but that didn't help.

Can anybody suggest what I should do next? Thanks,

Aart

Check the IDE controller driver in the system tab. Change it to standard
IDE and see if that helps.

This is a classic symptom of the read laser unit in the drive going
bad, especially when it eventually stops working altogether.

agreed, you can check for a firmware flash from HP/CD manufacturer. Some
flash programs come with a laser check, if it won't pass that, you'll know
its bad.
