I have a home network that is set up. Both computers are
visable on the network. My computer gets the internet but
I can not get it to work on my second computer. Support
tech at Adelphia states it may be in my tcp/ip stack. I
do not know what that is. He could or would not help
further.
He suggested we uninstall the network card and reboot. We
did that. Home network is working still thru the router.
Any suggestions?

both systems on xp home...

Glen Glen Glen,:~) Give us a little more info. Is this a new installation
of a router? Did the second computer ever access the internet through the
router? What is the address of the first and second computer
(start/run/type in command/enter/type in ipconfig/enter)?

Let's start there.

Trying to help,

Dave H.

Hi Dave - thanks.
Yes and no on the router (linksys switch). We were 100%
until I had a system issue this past weekend. (new-but bad
stick of ram caused issues, removed it and system is back
to normal now except network is gone.)
Connections to the net and home network thru this switch
were 100%.

Originally I - one computer was connected directly to the
cable modem, the other computer linked to mine thru the
linksys switch and vice versa.
we switched to cable modem being connected directly to the
linksys switch with both computers going thru the linksys
switch as well. I was told this is the better way. Both
systems are showing up on the network on each computer.
The connection is there.

Yes>Switching cables back and forth, one computer or the
other connects to the internet.
I have an ip address for the first computer - starts with
68.68...... - assigned thru adelphia. (this changes from
computer to computer while swithching cables back and
forth, having to reset modems etc each time)

the second ip address is 169.254.209...(that ip is,
according to adelphia)a service address(he said from
windows xp?). We parted ways after releasing and renewing
ip's.

I then went into M.Help and I followed the trouble shooter
all the way, step by step, everything as it should be,
until I got to "force the 192.168.0.1 on the client
computer" as it states that ip is always the default
address on the client computer.
That did not work, next step said to contact isp for dns
server static address. So I got another tech and
discovered Adelphia provides no static ip address unless I
want to rent one.(if available in my area). He said there
are better ways to fix this anyway...
We released and renewed, dos errors showing on the client
computer not being able to access the dchp. Again, parted
ways.
That is where I am now. Hope all this helps you help me.
The problem seems to be stemming from the client computer
ip address?
Again, thanks a million for the response.

In your first post, you say the dvice attached to the cable modem is a
"router", in a later post, you say it's a "switch". Which is it?

This is an important question, as a switch cannot act as a router, and
cannot obtain an address from your ISP. A switch cannot act as a DHCP
server, and this cannot pass on DNS and gateway info to the internal
clients.

If you do in fact have a switch and not a router, that's your problem.

It is a switch, everyone at Best Buy to the internet techs
I have talked to including linksys says I can use this.
Please see Networking support as I posted overthere the
same message. Easy locate by same time and date. 11/03
at 4 pm.
Thanks Tegger, I have a great friend that goes by that
name at times. She is awesome too. Thanks for the reply.

Yes you can, but you will have to contract with your ISP to buy two IP
addresses at once from them.

A router obviates this need by acquiring the address itself, then acting as
the traffic cop or middleman between the internal machines and the
Internet.

When you have a router, your ISP's servers see only one machine no matter
how many internal computers are communicating with it through the router,
so you only get charged for one IP address.
