Can't reach full capacity of Sony Micro Vault flash drive

The drive's stated capacity is 1GB. I'm trying to transfer to it 200 mp3
files, with a total file size of about 800 MB. After 121 files (539MB)
have been transferred, I get a message that the destination drive is
full, and I should insert a new disc to continue.

Before starting the transfer, using Windows 2000 Explorer I checked the
properties of the drive. It confirmed the capacity of 967MB, and that
all was available. After the transfer stopped, I again checked the
properties. It showed that 427MB were still free. The defrag program
showed that all the transferred file were contiguous and almost half the
drive was still free.

So what's preventing me from filling the rest of the drive?

The drive comes with a built-in compression program, but that can't be
wasting almost half the rated capacity.

The songs that are on the drive play perfectly in my new Sony car
radio's USB input.

Thanks,

Ray

Depending on the formatting of the drive there could be a limit of how many files can be in the root directory. You probably can copy them all to a subdirectory. If that does not work try splitting them up e.g. 50 files in each subdirectory.

Mike,

You hit the nail on the head. After deleting one song to make space for
a new folder, I moved the existing 120 songs into it and added enough
other files (about 100)to bring the used space up to just short of 1GB.
Plays perfectly in my car stereo.

Many thanks,

Ray
