can't re-install Windows XP

I'm trying to fix a problem where the PPPOE option in
My New Connection Wizard is unavailable. I've used both
methods in Microsoft Article 320558 to fix it and method
2 wants you to perform an in-place upgrade (re-install) of
Windows XP as its final step.

I've folowed the instructions in article 315341 to do
this, but instead of re-installing, I get a message which
says: 'application already running' and it won't let me
re-install it.

I'm maxed out on free microscoft support. Can anyone
help me?
thanks.

Susan,

At a guess, you didn't change the BIOS settings of your machine to boot from
the XP CD to do the repair installation. You must boot from the CD (rather
than your installed version of Windows) to do a repair installation.

You don't say what sort of PC you have. On mine, you get into the BIOS
settings by pressing the dle key during startup, before Windows begins to
load. Appliance PCs (Compaq, Dell, etc.) use different keys, but the basic
operation is the same.

Good luck.

You have I think followed Method 1 on that page. I don't know who
dreamed it up, but it does not work . Use Method 2, booting from the XP
CD.
